The Founding
Old Rag Mountain, 2003
Christmas is approaching. The mother of Josh Czarda's three little brothers — Jimmy, Cliff and Stephen — is in the ICU. Chemo has gone on for weeks. Josh simply wishes to give the boys something to take their minds off the future, even for a day.
Inspiration arrives in a shop window: a metal detector and an antique compass. Holding the compass — struck by its weight, its beauty, and the stories it might tell if only it could — it becomes clear. The thing to get the boys outside of it all is to get the boys outside of it all.
Josh scouts locations and develops clues that lead the brothers across the farm, through Warrenton, and up into the Shenandoah mountains, where he has buried an actual treasure chest in a cave near the top of Old Rag.
It is the look Stephen gives Josh when the boys dig the chest out of the ground — elation, wonder, happiness — that is a gift of equal measure.
Two decades later, Ravenchase has built one-of-a-kind moments for Disney, HBO, Fortune 500 companies, film productions, families, and a great many couples in love.
